Build Your Own Web Site - Method Two
[I want to do it my self!]
Although Method One is the easiest you are limited to the styles and
features available. For more freedom you will want to build your web
site from scratch. This does not mean you need to be a programer.
There are some handy tools which we will outline below and at the
right. The two main methods of building a site from scratch are to
construct it directly in HTML or to use a program that displays in
web format and writes the HTML in the background (commonly called
WYSIWYG, What You See Is What You Get).
Raw HTML Method
Building in raw HTML gives you the ultimate control over your site.
Even if you don't build a whole site this way you should understand
HTML and have a good HTML editor to adjust sites build with other
tools. I use the "HTML
& XHTML: The Complete Reference by Osborne" as a
tutorial and reference; it is outstanding. As a HTML editor I
use 1st Page 2000.
This free program includes a easy code insertion toolbar, preview
function and some handy scripts. These two items will provide what
you need to build a great web site. A great online training source is W3Schools
with free basic and advanced tutorials.
WYSIWYG Tool Method
Using a development tool allows you to build the site using a visual
representation. Just like a word processor sets the screen to look
like a printed page and hides all the code a WYSIWYG web tool lets
you work on a web page in a screen that looks like a web page. The
more advanced (more $) the development tool is the more it will
do. One of the top development tools is Dreamweaver.
This tool is surprisingly easy to use considering the features it
supports. I own the Dreamweaver
Studio which adds a number of graphics tools. On the "I can
afford this" list of WYSIWYG development tools you should check
out CoolPage.
CoolPage
uses the ease of drag-and-drop along with on the page editing. Once
you learn how your tool operates building web pages are a snap to
create and to maintain. In fact development tools are the best way to
provide ongoing maintenance for a web site. Another great tool
is Site2You
Which ever method you use remember what was covered on the Page
Layout and Site Content pages.
